5 easy rattan DIY ideas to try

18 Mar.,2024

The rattan trend started a while ago and it’s gone nowhere ever since.  That’s probably because rattan is a natural material that brings warmth and texture to a space.  And it goes with all sorts of decor but you probably see it most often in modern Scandi or Scandi rustic decor as it complements the Scandi style of home so well.

I remember the first time I tried a DIY rattan project, I didn’t know where to start. Would the rattan stick? Would it be bendy enough to make what I wanted.  Would it stand the test of time?  It actually ended up being much easier than I thought but it helps to start with little projects.  So I’ve got some small and easy rattan DIY ideas that are ideal if you’ve never created with rattan before.  And if you have, I think you’ll still love them as they’ll add a lovely touch to your home while helping you stay organised.

DIY Rattan storage boxes

This is the easiest of all the rattan projects on this list so the perfect one to start with.  These storage boxes look great and are perfect to hide away any unsightly things.  Display on shelves, coffee tables, bedside tables or anywhere where you have little bits to put away.  You could easily make a bunch of these in different sizes too.

DIY rattan pen / pencil pot

This is one of my own rattan creations so I can confidently say it’s not hard to make but can feel a little bit fiddly.  I made these rattan pen pots for my desk but they’d be equally handy as make-up brush holders.  I made them in two sizes which were perfect as desk accessories but you can make them as tall or as short as you want.

DIY rattan memo board

Next up is this easy peasy DIY memo board.  And it’s an Ikea hack too.  I love memo boards because they’re so useful but why shouldn’t they look great too.  This rattan one is ideal for a home office of course but it would work just as well in a kitchen, kids room or an entryway.

DIY rattan shelves

This is another Ikea hack which makes it an easy project because you’re not making the shelf, just hacking it!  Apart from in a kids room, these cane shelves would look great as a magazine holder or a spice rack in a kitchen.

DIY rattan jewellery organisers

Last are these minimal and chic rattan jewellery organisers.  What I love about these is that they look like wall art but are so handy too for keeping your jewellery organised and easily accessible.  No more tangled necklaces or digging around to find a pair of earrings!

While all these DIY rattan ideas are easy to make and look great, they’re also pretty useful.  From desk storage to jewellery organisation, pick the one you need the most and give it a try.
