Mountain biking was the newest branch of cycling in the 1980s and is now a popular trend, with thousands of people heading to the woods every weekend to have fun. If you haven't felt the call of the wild yet, this is why you should give it a try.
There was a time when the trails were almost an exclusive reserve for cyclists, especially on Sunday mornings. But now everyone is driving all the time, so even the tiniest of trails are rarely the quiet lanes they were in the pre-Sunday trading days.
Mountain Bike
To get away from motorised traffic, mountain bikes can easily be taken off the road and into the hills. You can ride the 'wild' trails and bridleways, as well as the dedicated trails in many trail centres across the country. However, you are not entitled to ride on public footpaths.
The lack of traffic makes mountain biking particularly attractive to beginners on bikes, who are often very reluctant to ride with trucks and boy racers. The easy trails and forest roads are perfect for developing basic riding skills.
In most cases the roads are predictable: they are firm under your tyres and can provide grip at lean angles that most people rarely achieve. Off-road conditions are very different: the surface is loose and slippery and almost never flat. You quickly learn to react to the bike moving underneath you and cope with slopes that are steeper than any road.
All of this will greatly improve your bike handling skills and take them to the road. I am an average mountain biker, but thanks to decades of trail riding experience, I can descend faster than most road cyclists. This gives me the opportunity to catch up after falling behind on climbs.
Mountain Bike
More advanced mountain biking skills are also useful on the road. If you can mountain bike or jump a mountain bike, you can jump off the road to avoid angry taxi drivers. Trails are a better place to learn this, and many trail centres have skill-building areas where you can practice your skills.
Mountain biking involves bursts of intensity that are hard to replicate on the road unless you are very disciplined about exploring the upper limits of your heart rate range. You may even find that your maximum heart rate is higher than you thought, especially if you're competing in a mountain bike race. Short bursts of high intensity can be an important part of your training mix; mountain biking is an ideal way to do this.
Go for a night ride
Riding off-road in the dark is like no other. With your handlebars and helmet lighting up the trails, you can travel through the night in your own personal bubble. Trees and trail obstacles emerge from the darkness and all your senses are heightened. You'll encounter animals rarely seen during the day: foxes, owls, badgers and more.
If mountain biking in general is fun and hones your riding skills, night riding takes it up to 11. Your reflexes will be enhanced and because it's harder to see and predict the trail surface, you'll learn to ride relaxed and react to every rock and root on the trail when you hit it.
