What Is GCL or Geosynthetic Clay Liners?

Engineered for a range of environmental containment applications, Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) are geotextile and bentonite composites (usually sodium bentonite sandwiched between two layers of geotextile). The high swelling capacity and low permeability of the bentonite provide an efficient hydraulic seal, while the geotextiles provide long-lasting resistance to physical or chemical breakdown in severe environments.

By substituting a thin layer of pure sodium bentonite for a substantial portion of the compacted clay in a traditional compacted clay liner, GCLs provide a great alternative. Simple installation, improved hydraulic performance, and resilience to changing weather conditions are all advantages. The majority of GCL projects may be installed by construction workers using standard tools. Additionally, GCLs feature special self-sealing qualities that lower the probability of failure because of unfavorable field and operating circumstances.
