I like slow travel. This means that I spend a long time in one location. I also practice yoga several times a week. Yoga might be one of the worst exercise activities to like to do while traveling because of the yoga mat, but it is possible to keep up your yoga practice while traveling the world. Keep reading to find out how to travel with a yoga mat!
If you enjoy doing yoga and traveling, you will probably want to bring your yoga mat with you. You could always rent a yoga mat at yoga studios. I recommend doing this if you are only taking a short vacation. The hassle of traveling with a yoga mat just isn’t worth it if you are only going to be gone for a week or two.
If you like traveling for a long time like me then I highly recommend bringing your own yoga mat. The cost of renting a yoga mat can add up quickly. Bringing your own yoga mat will also allow you the opportunity to practice yoga on your own in your Airbnb, hotel, hostel, or even at the beach!
Notice my yoga mat 🙂 Can You Carry a Yoga Mat on a Plane?Yes, I highly recommend carrying your yoga mat on an airplane. I carried my yoga mat as a carry-on when I traveled around Italy for three months. I recommend making sure that you have a proper yoga mat bag so your yoga mat can be easily carried through an airport. My yoga mat bag even has a pocket where I could stick random things for easy access like my water bottle. You could also try a yoga carrier that only has straps, but then you are missing out on the convenience of the extra pockets.
You can store your yoga mat in an overhead bin during the flight. If your flight gets delayed or you have a long layover, you can even roll out your mat to practice yoga in the airport! I’m probably not brave enough for that though 🙂
Should I pack my yoga mat in my suitcase? You can, but I highly recommend that you don’t. I packed my yoga mat in my suitcase when I moved to Thailand. It was very heavy. Bringing your yoga mat as a carry-on is a much better option. If you want to pack a yoga mat in your suitcase, I recommend the Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat. It only weighs 2.2 pounds!

Should I Buy a Travel Yoga Mat?I have never purchased a travel mat before because I don’t think that I would like them. I like the sturdiness of a regular yoga mat. Buying a travel yoga mat is probably the best option if you are traveling for a long time and living out of a backpack. A regular yoga mat can be annoying to carry around if you are moving around a lot.
If you want super lightweight, you can travel with only a yoga towel. The Manduka Yogi Toes Towels are my favorite because they have grippy rubber bumps on the bottom to help the mat from sliding.
