What are the Pros and Cons of LPG Boilers?

In addition to being used as a home heating system, LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is often used as fuel for cooking, vehicles, and aerosols. There are around 4million homes in the U.K. that are not connected to the natural gas network. Many of those are relying on an oil boiler to power their hot water and central heating. LPG boilers have some benefits, in that they are cheaper to purchase and produce less carbon emission than some other fossil fuels such as natural gas boilers. At Mr Central Heating, we like to be able to provide you with as much information on your purchases as possible. So, we've have considered both the pros and the cons of LPG boilers for you.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas boilers use very similar technology to natural gas or oil boilers in that they burn fuel to produce the energy needed to heat water in the home. The main difference is that because the LPG is not coming from a mains supply, it needs to be stored in tanks and brought to your home. To run an LPG boiler, you will need a relevant boiler, a storage tank and a supplier. Generally, the tank will need to be kept outside and you can often rent this from your supplier. LPG is more expensive than oil, but it is also a more efficient fuel so your bills may reduce in the long run, which is a great benefit.

Pros of LPG Boilers:

As with any boiler or fuel type, there are pros and cons. It depends on your situation and which boiler will be right for you. The pros of LPG boilers include cheaper upfront costs than an oil boiler. LPG boilers start from just under £400 which is a lot less than a natural gas boiler. It could be more than 50% cheaper than a natural gas boiler. It is a cleaner energy and will produce less carbon emissions. This is fantastic as the government is looking for incentives to support this in coming years. LPG boilers generally produce around 20% less carbon, which makes a big difference to your home's carbon footprint.   LGP boilers are also a great option if you’re looking to replace an old, inefficient boiler. On average, LPG boilers are around 90% efficient, wasting only 10p on the £1. They are compact in size and therefore perfect for smaller spaces such as park homes or tiny homes. They’re widely available, providing you with a great choice for your investment.  

Cons of LPG Boilers:

Of course, as with many things, there are also some cons. The fuel cost overall is higher than gas which means the ongoing cost can be higher. Delivery can also be an issue, and therefore you will always need to keep an eye on the fuel tank so not to run too low and be left without heat and hot water. As mentioned previously, you will also need a storage tank which you will need to purchase or rent. This will need to be taken into consideration before purchasing. It will either be an upfront cost to purchase or an extra monthly bill. It’s an additional cost that you may not have with other fuel types.   When it comes to boiler types, you can get heat only. LPG system boilers, and LPG combi boilers include domestic hot water (DHW) heating. This is no different to boilers that use other fuel types. Overall, LPG boilers are a great option for people who need a new boiler for their central heating system who are not on mains gas, as it’s efficient, compact and affordable.
