There are two types of AC rotors: squirrel cage rotors and wound rotor or slip ring rotors.

Squirrel cage rotors, also known as induction rotors, are the most commonly used type in AC motors. They are made up of laminated iron cores with conducting bars, typically made of aluminum or copper, placed in slots around the circumference of the rotor. These conducting bars are shorted at both ends by a heavy copper or aluminum ring, resembling a squirrel cage, hence the name. Carbon brushes press against these slip rings, allowing external electrical connections to be made. By adjusting the resistance or impedance, the torque-speed characteristics of the motor can be modified, making it suitable for specific applications that require a wider range of speed control and higher torque during starting.
